Title

From data to decisions: knowledge-driven ML in orthopedic surgery

Abstract

Orthopedic surgery generates complex data that is challenging to analyze but holds great potential for improving clinical decision-making. In this talk, I will present ongoing work on applying knowledge-driven machine learning approaches to surgical datasets, including the TKA dataset from German collaborators and the Aesculap Orthopilot dataset. While the TKA dataset revealed significant limitations for predictive modeling due to data quality issues, it provided valuable lessons on the importance of integrating domain expertise into machine learning workflows. Building on these insights, the current work with the Aesculap dataset explores how anatomical knowledge and surgical navigation data can be combined with ML techniques to enhance predictive accuracy and interpretability. As this research is still in a preliminary stage, I will share methodological directions, early findings, and open challenges. The seminar aims to highlight opportunities for knowledge-driven ML in orthopedics and to invite feedback and suggestions from experts on shaping the next steps of this work.

Bio

Dr. Senthil Murugan Nagarajan received his PhD in Computer Science in 2019 and previously served as a Senior Assistant Professor at VIT-AP University, India. Since 2022, he has been a Postdoctoral Researcher and Lecturer at the University of Luxembourg, working with the MIDAS team under the supervision of Prof. Christophe Ley. His research focuses on machine learning with applications in medical data analytics and the development of sports betting prediction models. He is currently collaborating with German doctors and Aesculap, Germany, on applying knowledge-driven ML techniques to orthopedic surgical datasets, including data from the Orthopilot system. His broader research interests include predictive modeling, multimodal data fusion, and explainable AI.

Speaker is presenting in person.

Practical

The Tuesday seminar series explores a wide range of topics relevant to our research themes. Each week, invited researchers present for 40 minutes, followed by a group discussion.
