Title
Post-Bayesian Machine Learning
Abstract
In this talk, I provide my perspective on the machine learning community's efforts to develop inference procedures with Bayesian characteristics that go beyond Bayes' Rule as an epistemological principle. I will explain why these efforts are needed, as well as the forms which they take. Focusing on some of my own contributions to the field, I will trace out some of the community's most important milestones, as well as the challenges that lie ahead. Throughout, I will provide success stories of the field, and emphasise the new opportunities that open themselves up to us once we dare to go beyond orthodox Bayesian procedures.
Bio
Dr Jeremias Knoblauch is currently an Associate Professor at UCL’s Department of Statistical Science, London, UK. He is also a visiting researcher at the Alan Turing Institute’s Data-Centric Engineering Programme. Prior to UCL, he was a doctoral candidate within the Oxford-Warwick Statistics programme (2016-2022) as well as the first UK-based Facebook Fellow (2020/2021). During that time, he also worked with the research arms of Amazon (2019) and DeepMind (2021).
His research revolves around extending the paradigm of Bayesian inference to cope with the challenges posed by modern large-scale data, simulator models, and machine learning techniques. In this context, he is particularly interested in generalised Bayesian inference, model misspecification and robustification strategies, computational challenges involving intractability, and variational methods.
Practical
This seminar is part of the seminar series on the thematic focus of uncertainty quantification (Objective 4: Machine learning with quantified uncertainty).
The Tuesdays seminars series are devoted to various topics relevant for the Integreat´s research focus. Presenters from the Integreat community and beyond have 40 minutes to present, followed by a group discussion.
Seminars are open for attendance for everybody.
