Title
Barotropic trends through Barents Sea opening for the period 1975-2021: The underlying physical processes explained using Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Flows of Atlantic Water from the Nordic Seas towards the Arctic Ocean are increasing, and contributing to the so-called «Atlantification» process of the Arctic. The flow from the Nordic Seas to the Barents Sea exhibits a trend for which no consistent physical explanation has been provided to this day. In order to crack this puzzle, we first reconstruct the flow high frequency variability from the Nordic Seas to the Barents Sea using a combination of ocean modelling and deep learning. The reconstruction is successfully achieved only under certain constraints which give us hints at what the underlying physical processes can not be, which is confirmed by a suite a sensitivity experiments. By a simple elimination process, we conclude that the trend has to be related with a wave driven process. This hypothesis is later confirmed by idealised wave propagation experiments, which provide a physical theory to explain what drives the structure of the flow. Using a surrogate model based on deep learning, we show that a shift in atmospheric variability towards lower frequencies, can explain the flow trend towards the Barents Sea. We then explain the details of our ocean modelling / deep learning approach.
Bio
Robinson Hordoir is a physical oceanographer and ocean modeller and is hired as a researcher at the Institute of Marine Research. He graduated with an engineering degree in fluid mechanics at Enseeiht, Toulouse, and defended his PhD thesis at the University of Caen, France. He specializes in the modelling of regions of freshwater influence in a changing climate. He is the main developer of the Nemo-Nordic configuration used for operational and research purpose around the Baltic & North Sea basins. He is now developing a similar configuration for Arctic & North Atlantic basins.
Practical
The Tuesdays seminars series are devoted to various topics relevant for the Integreat´s research focus. Presenters from the Integreat community and beyond have 40 minutes to present, followed by a group discussion.
Seminars are open for attendance for everybody.
