Description
In our next meeting, we will discuss a book chapter by Jude Browne (2023) titled: "AI and Structural Injustice: A Feminist Perspective".
This chapter examines how artificial intelligence can deepen existing forms of structural injustice, drawing on political theorist and socialist feminist Iris Marion Young’s theory and its key idea of “untraceability”, the difficulty of pinpointing responsibility in complex systems. Engaging further with Hannah Arendt's concept of ‘thoughtlessness’, Browne connects these ideas to the growing opacity of algorithmic decision-making. Finally, Browne proposes more democratic and participatory forms of governance, such as a pluralistic, citizen-centred “AI Public Body”, to help address the injustices AI systems may produce.
Pernille Soland (MA student at IFIKK) will open the session with a short introduction to the article, outlining its main arguments.
Participants are strongly encouraged to read the article in advance and to come prepared with questions, comments, and critical reflections, as the session is intended to be discussion-driven.
