Description
Synthetic data is an emerging and rapidly evolving topic that spans technical, ethical, political, and epistemic domains. While technical development is often centered in computer science, statistics, and engineering, the humanities provide essential perspectives on meaning, value, governance, and the social consequences of synthetic-data adoption.
The aim of this research kitchen is to broaden the conversation by bringing together humanities scholars who study synthetic data from complementary angles.
Possible topics for discussion
Map and compare humanities approaches to synthetic data across different application fields (healthcare, governance, economy, cultural heritage, etc.).
- Surface ethical, political and epistemic questions specific to synthetic data (e.g., authenticity, trust, accountability, bias, ownership).
- Identify conceptual differences between synthetic and “regular” datasets and their implications for knowledge production.
- Share methodological practices for interdisciplinary work (how to collaborate with technologists, clinicians, policymakers).
- Co-develop practical outputs: recommended definitions, research questions, regulatory considerations.
Invited speakers
- Stefano Canali, Politecnico di Milano
- Benjamin Jacobsen, York University
- Ekaterina Pashevich
- Jens Ulrik Hansen, Roskilde University
- Irina Alex Shklovski, University of Copenhagen

About research kitchens
A research kitchen is a small, collaborative workshop designed to bring together a group of researchers with a shared interest. The aim is for participants to meet and “cook” interesting “dishes” together. These dishes may take the form of new ideas, collaborations, topics, results, questions, papers, project proposals for funding, and more. All participants are expected to bring their own “ingredients” to the table and to actively engage in the process.
