Let’s be perfectly queer: reflections on role modeling and norms in academic computing

Academics of all career stages and identities can be role models, whether they intend to be or not. In this session, we will explore how everyday actions, decisions, and silences shape the experiences of researchers in computing. Drawing on research on role modeling, norms, and inclusion, and reflections from lived experience, we will examine both the positive and negative dimensions of our influence: how we contribute to cultures of belonging, or, sometimes unknowingly, to cultures of silence or harm. Taking the perspective of queer inclusion and joy, we will consider: What behaviors do we normalize? What do we challenge?

Join us to increase our awareness and agency together!
